Dr. Shyamsundar Muthuramalingam
Dr. Shyamsundar Muthuramalingam (Shyam) holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry and is a kidney transplant recipient with personal experience in Haemodialysis (HD) and kidney disease. Combining lived experience and research acumen, he's a prominent figure in shaping consumer engagement strategies within the healthcare sector.
Dr Muthuramalingam is at the forefront of devising, executing, and assessing consumer and community involvement initiatives across influential bodies such as the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry (ANZDATA), South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), The George Institute for Global Health and Kidney Health Australia (KHA).
His dedication extends to his roles as a consumer member of the National Clinical Advisory Committee at KHA and the Australian Medical Council, where he plays a crucial role in representing the community's voice in the accreditation of medical degrees. Notably, his appointment to NHMRC's Consumer Statement Advisory Committee reflects his commitment to refining the role of consumers in health and medical research.
Currently, Shyam is a member of ACTA’s Consumer Engagement, Equity, and Diversity Working Group and contributed to the recommendations aimed at enhancing clinical trial engagement, involvement, and participation for people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds. In collaboration with PRAXIS, Shyam conducts interactive workshops on Enhancing Consumer and Community Engagement in Clinical Trials. These workshops are tailored for Clinical Trial Coordinators, Clinical Trial Managers, Early-career research and clinical trial staff, and Research Managers, making a lasting impact on the landscape of clinical research and engagement.
